THE AUGMENTED INSTRUMENTALIST

Completed: June 2010

“Anyone who has become entranced by the sound of dripping water in the darkness of a ruin can attest to the extraordinary capacity of the ear to carve a volume into the void of darkness. The space traced by the ear n the darkness becomes a cavity sculpted directly in the interior of the mind”

– Juhani Pallasmaa, (2005)

The city of Venice has a unique acoustic character; the effects of which are augmented by the weekly flooding phenomenon of the acqua alta. This project projects forwards to a time when the MOSE dam is complete and the aqua alta has become a thing of the past. During the early stages of the project, I undertook intensive research to analyse and visualise the current acoustic character of Venice using simulation software such as Ecotect and Odeon. I used this analysis as a design tool around which the architecture was wrapped. In addition to digital simulation, I also fabricated a number of physical prototypes which provided immediate feedback as to the success of certain design features such as the chamber (waffle) wall. The analysis and prototypes were continually translated between each realm, using tools such as a 3D scanner and CNC milling machine.
