This piece has been written with the acoustic character of the performance space at Shoreditch church in mind. High frequencies reverberate and linger within the ceiling of the nave whilst low frequencies resonate through the floor. When performed in the space “Construction 001” simultaneously tests this spatio-acoustic hypothesis, whilst evoking a sense of sonic verticality. Horizontally, the space is very symmetrical, thus the orchestra is split into two, about the long axis of the church (referred to as “left” and “right” orchestras). This piece is also intended to test the resonant capabilities of the instruments of the orchestra. Whilst respecting the range of each instrument, the piece celebrates compositional moments of tension by requiring instruments to sound tones at the edges of their usual range…
