CASTING COUCH

… With limited resources over the Christmas break, I stole a few old bedsheets and made a few small tests for casting thin double-curved shells. Here is a preview of my latest bunch made by painting plaster (very quickly) onto a “flexible membrane” …… inspired by a range of spraying/wiping techniques used by the guys at C.A.S.T

Hours of Ecotect analysis on digital models has taught me that hard, curvy shells of variable thicknesses have the capacity to create and manipulate some very interesting acoustic spaces and effects. I’m planning methods to make these small tests much bigger and more ambitious until they can be tested and compared alongside their digital versions…

Without giving too much away… the next stage of this project will develop a poetic conversation between the fluid properties of my chosen palette of materials: Sound, fabric and concrete (in the context of Venice)… Much more to come…
